Su23e - Intermediate Debate Program

Su23e - Intermediate Debate Program

This class is offered as a PHYSICAL class.

Morning Session: 9 AM to 12 Noon - Monday through Friday

In debate, students must utilize many levels of higher order thinking: argument analysis, idea synthesis, response predictions and case evaluation, just to name a few.  They must answer questions similar to what they might experience in a modern testing situation under the Common Core guidelines.  What makes debate even better is that both judges and opponents provide real time evaluation and feedback of a student’s arguments: During a debate round, the debater must always be ready for a response from his or her opponent.

New England Academy's (NEA) Debate course allows students to build on the fundamental skills of debate.  The class includes improving introductions and conclusions, analyzing opponents' arguments for weaknesses, and constructing complex responses to arguments.   Intended to allow intermediate to advanced debate students, this class is ideal for students who have completed the introductory debate class or have debate and/or public speaking experience.

Like other NEA classes, during this 10 day course students will be introduced to three debatable topics, provided articles to help students understand the topics, and offered multiple chances to debate each topic.  Topics are relevant and often about current real world issues, yet age appropriate.  Students are given ample practice speaking and debating these topics.

This class is intended for students entering grades 4 and above in the fall.
