S19e - Stock Policy Issues
Morning Session: 9 AM to 12 Noon - Monday through Friday
In debate, several issues are identified as critical points in the balance between proposition and opposition victory. These key elements are known as the stock issues. The stock issues are recurrent questions essential to the propositions burden. Students should understand the logic behind these issues in order to inform their critical thinking. In the legal realm, the failure of the proposition to meet the burden of any of the stock issues results in a failure to prove its case and win the debate. The opposition should understand how to identify the weaknesses and challenge the proposition's understanding. The proposition should know how to defend.
This 10 day course focuses on improving students' understanding of issues as a whole, rather than individual parts. Students are taught to strategically prepare a debate case, analyze opponents cases for contradiction and weakness, and construct complex responses to entire cases. This class is ideal for experienced debaters who have completed at least one season with New England Academy.
Prerequisites: Intermediate Debate and permission of instructor.
Throughout the class, students will engage in multiple debates in order to practice skills emphasized in this class. Topics are relevant and often about current real world issues, yet age appropriate.
This class is intended for students in grades 7 and up.
